The periodontal ligament, or PDL, is one of the most important yet often overlooked structures in the mouth. Barely visible to the naked eye, this thin band of connective tissue between the tooth and the alveolar bone acts as a living, dynamic biological interface that senses force, coordinates bone remodeling, and holds the key to periodontal regeneration.

Meet Prof. Satoru Yamada, DDS, PhD


Professor Satoru Yamada is a periodontologist and researcher at Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry in Japan, where he is also involved in clinical periodontal treatment, education, and clinical research at Tohoku University Hospital. His primary research interest lies in the biology of the periodontal ligament, with a particular focus on how periodontal tissues are maintained in health, damaged by inflammation, and how they can be stimulated to regenerate.

Prof. Yamada's current work explores how controlling intracellular signaling pathways and cellular metabolism may enhance the regenerative potential of PDL cells – an approach that points toward a future where periodontal therapy activates the patient's own biology rather than relying solely on external materials.

The Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry is Prof. Yamada's academic home, where his research on periodontal ligament biology and periodontal tissue regeneration is based.
